Help Wanted: Call for Production Team Volunteers

Community Theatre has many roles you can play without setting foot on the stage!

OnStage Uxbridge Community Theatre is currently seeking volunteers who are willing to assist or train as part of one of the production teams for any of the 4 shows in our 2015/16 Season.

Producer / Assistant Producer:

This is the chief planning role, so if you are a detail-oriented person who thrives on event planning, this is the one for you! With input from the OnStage Uxbridge Board, the Producer’s responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following: liaising with director to establish their vision for the show, making arrangements for and booking audition and rehearsal space, helping to put together and oversee the production team (all the people listed here), creating and managing show budget and expenses, maintaining the show schedule and ensuring everything is on track, chairing regular meetings with the production team, overseeing promotion and the promotion schedule. Time commitment: A few hours per week for 6-8 months, but it varies in intensity over that period and you have a lot flexibility over your time until the show is ‘set in’ (the last 3 or 4 weeks).

Promotion:

Responsibilities include: putting up posters, signs and displays where possible, writing press releases, arranging for photo ops, attending local events, arranging for video trailers and social media coverage, preparation of program (with input from Producer), investigating sponsorships. Time commitment: A few hours per week over 3 months but timing is very flexible.

Stage Manager / Assistant Stage Manager:

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): attending rehearsals, opening/closing rehearsal spaces and theatre, taking notes for the director on blocking (position & movement of actors on the stage), prompting actors for lines, management of set changes during shows, management of props during shows, working with Lighting and Sound Operators to manage cues for lighting/sound during shows, assisting with set building/dressing, cleaning/maintaining the set, assisting with tear down. Time commitment: 9-10 hours per week over 4-5 months for Stage Manager, or over 4-6 weeks for Assistants (must be available for all shows and dress rehearsals).

Lighting Designer / Operator:

Responsibilities include: working with the director and script to understand lighting needs and vision, set/adjust lighting as appropriate, running lighting cues prior to show to ensure everything works as it is supposed to, checking the board prior to each show to ensure everything is running as it should, communicating with Stage Manager and running light cues during show. The Lighting Designer may just choose to design and set the lights and not run them during the show, in that case a Lighting Operator will be needed. Time commitment: a couple of hours per week over 2-3 months for Lighting Designer (fairly flexible but more hours in the weeks leading up to and during the show performances), 3-4 weeks for Lighting Operator (must be available for all shows and dress rehearsals).

Sound Designer / Operator:

Responsibilities include: working with the director and script to understand sound needs and vision, record sounds and set/adjust sound system and speakers/microphones as appropriate, running sound cues prior to show to ensure everything works as it is supposed to, checking the board prior to each show to ensure everything is running as it should, communicating with Stage Manager and running sound cues during show. The Sound Designer may just choose to design and set the soundboard and not run it during the show, in that case a Sound Operator will be needed. Time commitment: a couple of hours per week for 2-3 months for Sound Designer (very flexible but more hours in the weeks leading up to and during the show performances), 3-4 weeks for Sound Operator (must be available for all shows and dress rehearsals).

Set Build Manager / Team:

Responsibilities include: working with the director and script to understand set needs and vision, creating a set design complete with measurements that fits the stage, meets any health & safety requirements, has the director’s approval and falls within the budget allotted by the producer, sourcing materials from OnStage Uxbridge’s storage facility that can be used in the build and locating and purchasing any additional materials required for building, deciding on a build schedule based on the show schedule and set-in dates, communicating with the build team to ensure availability for build times and for set move-in and tear-down dates, ensuring that set is complete prior to tech run. Time commitment: 3-4 months for Set Designer (varies depending on the intricacy of the set), 4-6 weeks for the Build Team (must be available for set move in and tear down).

Properties (Props) Manager / Set Dresser:

Responsibilities include: working with the director and script to understand prop/set dressing needs and vision, building prop list/set dressing list (includes furniture), sourcing materials from OnStage Uxbridge’s storage facility that can be used and locating and purchasing/borrowing any additional materials required, communicating with Stage Manager and Producer to keep them up-to-date on which props/set dressing items have been secured and which are still needed, ensuring that props list/set dressing is complete prior to tech run. Time commitment: a few hours per week for 2-3 months for Props Manager (depending on how big the prop list is) 2-3 months for the Set Dresser (depending on how great the set dressing needs are). Timing is flexible for both and the timelines are longer to ensure sufficient time for sourcing/ordering/delivering or building.

Costume Designer / Assistance:

Responsibilities include: working with the director and script to understand costume needs and vision, taking measurements, building a costume list, sourcing costumes from OnStage Uxbridge’s storage facility that can be used and locating and purchasing/borrowing/creating any additional costumes required, communicating with Stage Manager and Producer to keep them up-to-date on which costumes have been secured and which are still needed, ensuring that costumes are complete prior to tech run. Time commitment: a few hours per week for 3-4 months for Costume Designer (depending on how big the costume list is) timing is flexible but the timelines are longer to ensure sufficient time for sourcing/ordering/delivering or creating. 1 month for Assistants (must be available for all shows and dress rehearsals).

Front of House Manager:

Responsibilities include: working with the director and producer to understand show vision, creating bio board display for cast and crew and other atmosphere/decor in lobby appropriate to the theme of the show, sending out call for ushers and arranging the front of house schedule to ensure sufficient coverage for each show, purchasing refreshments in advance and ensuring their preparation, handling donation money for refreshments, overseeing ushers and intermission refreshments, cleaning up after refreshments, ensuring availability of box office staff, seating set-up and, if required tear down, work with stage manager to confirm show start time.

Time commitment: 4-6 weeks (ideally available for all shows).

Hair & Make-Up Assistance:

Responsibilities include: working with the director, costume designer and script to understand hair & make-up needs and vision. Time commitment: 3 weeks (must be available for all shows and dress rehearsals).
